NTGent

NTGent, Gent, Belgium

The NTGent is the city theatre of Ghent, founded in 1965. It got an international reputation from 2005 onwards under artistic leadership of Johan Simons and is led since 2018 by Milo Rau & Nathalie De Boelpaep. It counts with 3 auditoriums in the city, around 85 FTE’s work for the company and yearly it reaches 80.000 to 100.000 visitors in Ghent and on tour.

The city theatre that we are interested in stands between tradition and utopia. It does not remain on the stage on which it was rehearsed, but it tours internationally. And it brings global issues to the city. We will be travelling with our ensemble for research and events: to northern Iraq and Congo, for example. We offer a stage to actors and non-professionals of different nationalities and languages. We make our plays together: with all those involved, with the audience, in a constant interaction with society. After all, we are not only interested in the canon of classical theatre, but especially in the world we live in.  We are searching for new classics, for myths, tragedies and contradictions of our time: by mythologizing current affairs and by updating mythology. This way we want to shape a political, mobile and creative ‘city theatre of the future’.
