Open call for a new theatre director of BIT Teatergarasjen

After almost 40 years as founder and director of one of Bergen’s most significant cultural institutions, Sven Åge Birkeland resigns as theater director for BIT Teatergarasjen.

Birkeland was one of the founders of Bergen International Theater in 1983 and has worked as artistic director and theater director in an institution that has been central in the development and exchange of contemporary performing arts, both nationally in Norway and internationally. He has also been a key driver in working towards and reestablishing an arena for contemporary performing arts in the city of Bergen, a project that eventually landed on the decision to transform the old bath house in Bergen, Sentralbadet, into a performing arts house. A house which will be the new home of BIT Teatergarasjen together with the Norwegian national company of contemporary dance, Carte Blanche, and which is scheduled to open to the public in 2024.

Birkeland has chosen to resign due to serious illness, and will resign by 1st of June 2022. Due to partial sick leave, he currently works 25% and Karoline Skuseth is therefore temporarily acting theater director in a 75% position. The position as theater director is now being advertised in consultation with Birkeland.
