Laws of physics upturned by wryly comedic dance mix
A visit to Screws, the latest show conceived by Belgian choreographer and former circus performer Alexander Vantournhout, entails something other than the usual viewing of stage action from a seat. Instead, you will be wandering around the beautiful old building of Minerva Art Academy on Praediniussingel, choosing for yourself from which angle you enjoy the various live miniature compositions. Together with five dancers who are also acrobats, Vantournhout guides you through an absurd journey along a series of micro-performances. These range from brief, poetic solos and duets to fleeting group choreographies. Dancers retain their balance – or just manage not to – thanks to objects attached to their bodies: ice cleats, bowling balls and anti-gravity shoes. The objects either help overcome gravity or enhance its effect. In this manner, Screws defies the laws of physics and upends the relationship between body and object. Immerse yourself in this utterly unique, wryly comedic mix of circus and modern dance.
